I'm having a really hard time deciding. Please help if you can.
I am passionate and experienced with both areas. I've worked with my dad (systems engineer) and I've been in many high school, community, and other plays and have an interest in film acting (acting since 7, film and theater experience) and a lifetime contract with John Robert Powers Modeling and Acting Agency.
They're both dear to my heart and When I think of Acting, I want to do nothing else. When I think of Computer Science, Computer Engineering, I'm so excited to start...
but I don't know if they will let me double major in such a diverse double-major.
I need advice.
Should I do an Acting BFA major or a Computer Science BS major in college?
I'd need a lot more information about you to give you any kind of a definitive answer here, but I'll say this much:
Contrary to the prevailing wisdom (particularly among BFA students), a BFA is not -- I repeat, NOT -- a terminal degree. I used to teach in a very highly-regarded BFA program, and it used to kill me to see students graduating and thinking that the training component of their professional lives was complete.
The point I'm trying to make is...if you're torn between the two major fields of study, go CS. See if you can double-major in Drama and take a BA there. If, by the time you finish your undergradute education, you discover that you truly have "the calling" to be a professional performer...you can always go and get some high-level graduate/conservatory training.
Good luck.
Reply:Could you pick 2 majors MORE on the opposite ends of the spectrum? What do you like to do and what do you want to PAY for. Quit fishing for comments and adoration.
Reply:First off, are you sure that you would be able to double major? Not just in regards to your two subject matters: BFA's don't have a minor, it's like majoring and minoring in the same subject. At my university at least, you cannot double-major if you're a Theatre BFA. (I'm a Stage Management emphasis BFA and I wanted to double-major in English...)
You might think about doing what I ended up doing. I went to a community college for two years and got AA's in Theatre, English, and Spanish. At the beginning I couldn't pick between Theatre and English, but after two years of college it was pretty clear to me what I wanted to get a degree in and what I would do best with after college.
Here's the thing:
A Computer degree won't help you get a job in Acting.
An acting degree won't help you get a job in computers.
Which one do you want to spend your life doing? Do you want to play it safe, or do you want to do what you love regardless of how many day jobs you have to hold down to do it?
I think it's great that you're asking these questions now instead of when it's too late to really change without ramifications. Is there a way that you could spend your freshman semester taking the introductory coursework for both and see which courses you end up being happier in?
Reply:I would go major in Computer Science, but then be involved in the theater and film group at your school. You really don't need to go to school for acting. Its nice to have, but the biggest reason for it is to get the connections you'll need after you graduate. Get the Computer Science degree so just encase your acting career doesn't take off like you would like, you have that to fall back on.
But really...Just live what you love. What you can't stand not doing....only you can answer that.
Reply:While I'm neither an Acting or a Computer Science major, I AM in college, so hopefully I can help a little!
It seems like you feel passionately about both subjects. It's definitely possible, but don't expect to graduate college in the "typical" four years. I say go for it...I wish more people were excited about what they chose to do in life!
One of my friends majored both in Math and Dance, if that makes you feel any better! :-)
Hope this helped.
