I'm majoring in my third year of computer science and just realized that many jobs wanting my expertise will be office/cubicle jobs. Having an office/cubicle job right now and deciding that the office life is not right for me, I'm wondering where I will end up in the future. I'd prefer a job where I can travel and live wherever I want, perhaps somewhere in Europe, and write/modify code from a remote location. That would make me happy.
My computer science professors emphasize working on teams and I don't know if I would be able to travel and do what I want and still remain part of that team.
What I'm really saying is that my dream is to travel (not just whimpy vacations, but to live), but most jobs in the computer science field are office-like and, in my opinion, boring.
Does anyone have any advice on how I can do both with a computer science degree? - travel and work remotely.
What kind of Computer Science jobs exist?
What you will probably need to do (As a practical approach) is to get some job/work experience and do at least 3-5 years at the cubicle/work place. Once you have proven your experience and expertise and have become invaluable to the company and have an idea of how the business works, you can try to be a consultant type or a contract type worker and do things remotely.
You have to find clients that are willing to let you do this though and not very many will.
I had an acquaintance who was able to work remotely on some Adobe applications, but once he was finished with that he was looking for more projects but was unable to find any.
One of the things that might be difficult is that many companies have "classified" projects for their best programmers and you can only have access to company computers in secured locations. It is virtually impossible to work remotely on those projects and you WILL have to work in teams on large projects. These types of projects do provide one with higher pay as well.
You can travel and work remotely, but you will have to be successful in finding contract work. As you have written, most work is in office/company and within teams.
