Many of my cousins have got a degree in computer science. Once they graduate and look for jobs, they find it very difficult to get a good one or one at all. Why does this occur? What's so wrong with computer science major? Doesn't the job market offer alot of computer science-related jobs? I just want to know people's opinions.
Why is Computer Science field such a challenging market to obtain a job?
I'm a computer programmer, and it seems like I hear a lot of young people saying this. Most of them don't have experience, and most of the jobs require some kind of experience. If you need experience, like I once did, you have to be creative if you don't already have a job where they will promote you to an I.T. job. You either have to do volunteer work, self employment work, or something. State, County, City jobs are the best place for entry level work, and once you have experience you can probably go to work in the private sector for twice as much money.
Reply:A degree don't mean much if you can't "do" the job. I only have a 2 year networking degree and I work at the the third largest software company. In this field you need to demonstrate competence, not show it on paper. The Internet boom and bust showed that there were too many people getting jobs simply because of the paper they had, not their skills. Coming right out of college you don't really have experience (usually). Try starting low I worked at 2 different computer related jobs while in college. I worked in the Help desk at my school and I sold and repaired computers at my other job. It all counts as experience. Other than experience you need two other very important skills. 1. Troubleshooting skills and 2 Communication skills. Combine the three with a little luck and "Social Networking" like your local Linux users group and they'll find those good jobs.
