Do you need a laptop for a computer science major?

I'm looking to purchase a new computer. I'm taking computer science at college in the fall and common sense would tell me I need to buy a laptop as I might need to bring it in for presentations and notes and programming. I realize that not every classroom I'll be in will have a comprehensive computer lab. Is this a correct assumption and should I buy a laptop for school.

or are my assumptions not true and a laptop won't be needed and I should buy another desktop?

I went through 4 years of a CS degree and never once brought my laptop to the school. So it is not NEEDED. But I have seen many people do exactly what you are talking about and they have found it useful.

So I suggest that you do go purchase a laptop and keep it for school purposes only. Dont install any games on it. That way it will keep the processing power free to run your development utility.
Reply:You will need a laptop to do homework assignments if you want to stay in your dorm. Also, many colleges shut their computer labs down after it gets dark. You probably need a laptop, you can get something cheap but it will do the trick, you aren't going for making "Doom 3" are you?
