I've always wanted to be a technical writer/spin doctor/propagandist. I was just wondering if a duel major in English and Computer Science would prepare me for any other kinds of jobs.
I chose English and Computer Science because thanks to a loop hope in my college: I didn't need to take a foreign language (yuck!) or differential equations (double yuck!) and I got a B.S. degree in both English and Computer Science.
I couldn't decide what subject I wanted to major in, so I ended up majoring in both; it took an extra year, but I think it was worth it because it opened up so many more doors for me.
Now, if only I could decide what door I wanted to go through--maybe writing content for web pages, but I want to earn at least 75K or more, if possible.
What jobs would a duel major in English and Computer Science get me?
Let's not fight (duel) about this! A dual major for those can get you a wonderful teaching job in high school handling English classes in a computer lab. Lots of possibilities there. And a lifetime of security, health and retirement benefits, and perhaps the knowledge that you touched someone's life.
Reply:i guess u wud go around slapping pple and dueling lol
Reply:If you're interested, you'd probably be very attractive to tech or software companies for doing sales/marketing kind of stuff. I don't know how much that CS degree adds, but speaking as a soon-to-be graduate myself, I think 75k out of school is shooting pretty high.
Reply:Go for technical writing. I am sure you are aware of how incomprehensible some tech writing can get, especially materials written for the non-techie consumer.
Reply:Technical writing is NOT your thing.
Computer science is very broad. What area of computer you are more into?
Networking, security, business applications, science applications, …..
If you want to earn %26gt; 75,000.00 you need to go for system analyst / software engineering.
The first few phase of system design is to ‘survey the situation’, ‘study the current system’, ‘define user requirements’, …
Having 2nd degree in the type of the system you are analyzing and designing is very attractive to employers who pay 6 digits salaries.
You have to be interested and talented in ‘System analysis and Design’ - ‘Software Engineering’. I am sure you had at least one course with that subject in your computer science degree.
Then you need to start working with your ‘English Degree’ and feel the need for computerized tool in that industry. Then design a software to handle your needs in ‘English’. I am sure you can sell that software to others who doing ‘English stuff.’
Otherwise you are not looking to make 6 figure salary from computer degree.
Reply:which college? where?
