I finished my Masters degree in Computer Science and I want to do MBA, do I have to do BA first?

I am afraid that I will have to do 3 more years in Business Administration so that I could do MBA. So, I would like to know does the Masters in Computer Science help me in a certain way? or, it is considered as if I did nothing in the past 5 years?

I finished my Masters degree in Computer Science and I want to do MBA, do I have to do BA first?
Don't be so afraid. If you will do an MBA in your college, where you took Computer science, then it it's probable that the units/subjects you took will be accredited, thus giving you the ability to take MBA directly. But I think that you would still take some units. Being able to directly take MBA, then you should be able to finish everything in about 3 more years(If you study full time), without your Computer Science lessons going to waste.^^
Reply:A GMAT should be getting you in that is when your average scores are high enough. There are GMAT practice sites free online available. See below. Good luck.
Reply:You do not have to have a bachelor's in business to get an MBA at any school I'm aware of. My bachelor's is in computer engineering - friends at school have degrees in CS, French literature, political science, law, everything I can think of.
Reply:I have two MBA degrees and my undergrad degree is in history. So, no, you needn't go back and get a bachelor's in business in order to qualify for MBA admissions.

I have written a computer science book for students. Where to publish it?

I heard about writers magazine but want authors to suggest me the best publisher not POD.

I have written a computer science book for students. Where to publish it?
Contact the Education company
Reply:Get yourself a copy of Writer's Market, and get ready to submit, submit, submit.

PODs are tricky, because of course they'll publish almost anything, but they may not have the resources to get your book to a target market.

I found a local publisher who handles strictly regional talent marketed regionally. Good luck.

What exactly is a computer science degree?

what is it exactly a study of? and what types of positions does it offer? thanks

What exactly is a computer science degree?
A computer science degree usually requires three years of full-time study. Computer science is concerned with the science of computing, the scientific design and use of computer hardware and software in all these areas. Computer science is a broad discipline, encompassing software design and programming, the actual computing machinery, the theoretical foundations, and all of the applications of computing which pervade our modern society. This degree provides an in-depth study of computing with an emphasis on the software, hardware and theory of computation to solve commercial, scientific and technical problems. It also explores software design and programming, computer hardware, the theoretical foundations of computing and its present and potential applications.

WIth a computer science degree, you can work as a computer programmer, system analyst, systems programmer/administrator, web programmer/developer, database design and management, network administrator, IT project manager, multimedia programmer, or games programmer.
Reply:I hold a Bachelor of Science in computer science. It is a university degree, encompassing the various aspects of computers including languages, operating systems, file structure, a small amount of electronics (at least enough to understand the logic of a processor), networking, and related coursework. As a university degree, it also requires credits in the realm of arts and sciences - languages, music, literature, the sciences, government, history, and so on.

No degree guarantees a job, of course, but most of my work since earning my degree has been in systems design. I earned my degree before the advent of personal computers, so I went back to study new languages, hardware, processors, and whatever else I needed to continue to be employed.
Reply:COMPUTER SCIENCE IS AWESOME1!!!!11!!!!!

You study uhhh computer science. You learn about algorithm analysis, how programming works, how the inner workings of a computer work, stuff like that, it's hard to explain I suppose. Computer scientists are the ones who write new languages, and if you want to be a programmer, you would probably major in computer science. I knew someone who wrote a decompiler for their doctorate in computer science, if that gives you an idea.

And computer science will never be obselete lol, and as for jobs, well ya a lot is outsourced or whatever, but there's of course still jobs here, but as to how many in relation to how many people that do such jobs, i have no idea
Reply:not sure, I bet its obsolete before you get it though
Reply:it is really a physics degree with added computer courses. You will be doing lots of math lots of physics and lots of engenering. The c language is an engeneering language.

You will be able to get computer programming languages that make software or firmware depending on what company you work for. The field of employment is very large every from banks to hospitals to small business. There is just to many to list. You can always work for a big time company like IBM or Microsoft. Remember you will be making programs to run machinery All kinds not just computers.

hope this helps

What are some good minors for a computer science major?

I was thinking about math or some kind of business, but I'm not realy sure.

What are some good minors for a computer science major?
I manage a software team for a large corporation and I have software engineers working for me that have degrees in Computer Science, Eleetrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Aero Engineering. My CS folks tend to be best at implementing designs.

One of my more valuable CS folks has a math minor and she has helped in the development of algorithms and has assisted other people with coordinate conversions and other functions vital to the project's overall success.

I would advise a math minor. You can't go wrong with that and I believe it will enhance both your marketablility in the job market and your career.

A business minor may not be nearly as valuable, especially if you decide to take a technical path in your career rather than a management path. If you do decide on a management path an MBA would be more beneficial than a business minor. Since many corporations offer tuition reimbursement you can always go back for an MBA later if you decide on a management path.

Macbook or PC laptop for Computer Science student?

Hi!. Im going to start computer science and i wanted to buy a laptop for uni. Should i buy a PC or Mac. Thinking abt buying a vaio or macbook.

Thanks.

Macbook or PC laptop for Computer Science student?
Heyy all these other guys are computer geeks. Ya know? i'm a student age 16. And i have a macbook i can tell you i really love it you would do. Its great for creating assignments, typing, presantations that kind of stuff. Thyre fast an dont get viruses and thyre tons of stuff to have fun with when your not working. Highly reccomended
Reply:You'll get more for your money with a MacBook. A Sony Vaio can only run Windows while the MacBook can run both Mac OS X and Windows XP or Vista. I'm running Mac OS X and Windows Vista on my MacBook Pro. These are very versatile notebooks. It's like getting two machines for the price of one. In any case, I prefer using Mac OS X. Vista is okay, but it's nowhere near as sophisticated as Mac OS X.

Macs are great for science. Here's a link:

http://www.apple.com/science/
Reply:Well, i guess buying a PC laptop is better for u. after a while u may think about switching between different operating systems the PC laptop would work for many of this.

But if u one of this guys who like graphics most, so macbook would be the best choice.

Good Luck in ur study ;)
Reply:comp science laptop.... well. current fastest ram on a laptop is 2GB which i have. i own the HP-dv6449us . which runs on a amd turion 64x2 tech. which is fast compared to others. and runs on a nvidia graphics card. its 899.99 right now.

or go to www.gamestop.com and go to laptops. they have good ones there but many might be more expensive with less gigs and ram oh the Hp has 140HD.

if you have time wait till the start of next year the QUAD-core will be releasing (quad core is used in hard-core gaming pcs)

and will be 2x faster then the core-duo.

the G5 macbook is nice too but more things are incompatible.

also HP-6449 has the ability for video creation saving at 1080p and 720 HD.

right now mac has a online sale on mac-books that come with a free NANO if your a student.

(reffering to the answer above:)

the mac-os to windows is a new feature currently avaiable only on LEAPORD

macs new OS. so you can download something that works on windows only on the windows os part then switch over to mac instantly and to something there.
Reply:DONT GET ThE VAIO! i bought one recently and it sucked. As for your question, it depends. Macs are good for school, but they are not compatable with anything! Macs do everything for you instead of a pc where you have to build it yourself. I would go with pc just because of the compadibility issues
Reply:You should get a PC instead of a Mac, especially if you're a Computer Science student. I would highly recommend a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092.

I'm interested in assembler, C, Perl, Python, and *nix, but I find that I lack the background to pick up on them quickly.

How can I i most quickly learn the fundamentals of computer science?
study visual basic first, it'll give u the base for all programming languages.
Reply:If you learn anything quickly, you end up missing things. Personally I'd recommend you avoid trying to become a programmer overnight, and take your time about it like most people do. Patience is a virtue!

I'm a physics major; should I double-major in math or computer science?

I was considering doing all 3, but man, no...

I may go to graduate school afterward (in maths?), since I eventually (may) want to become a professor.

But I've heard that physics majors can work as engineers right out of college.

I'm just generally unsure.

If I don't go to graduate school, which would enable me to get a higher-paying job (yea, I'm that shallow), a double-major in math or computer science?

I'm a physics major; should I double-major in math or computer science?
I honestly wouldnt do a math major and comp sci is kindof a reach for a physics major. I think with your physics background i would pick a engineering major. honestly i dont know what you would do with a major in math beside teaching. Also you wouldnt be able to utilize your physics major with a comp sci major so they arent compatible.

Yeah physics majors can probably work as engineers given they have enoguh background in whatever type of engineering whethers its civil, mechanical, electric, etc.

I think you should consider a type of engineering as a second or third major.

Reply:There's no such thing as a 'best' really - it depends on what is important to you. Some places will have the best record for graduate careers, somewhere else will have the best research assessment (a guide to the academic quality of the department) and somewhere else will have the best student satisfaction rating.

When choosing, remember that it is a personal choice and that you are looking for the place that suits you best. Make sure that the course includes the things you are most interested in and gives you a chance to do some work experience if you want it. Make sure that you visit in person and see the facilities so that you know how well funded the place is. In my experience most people have a gut feeling when they find the right place - its no bad thing to look for a place where you believe you'll feel you belong and be happy.

If you want to look up some statistics and compare different courses, go to www.tqi.ac.uk - this is an independent government website where you can look up things like this. It gives you the raw data, and doesn't draw conclusions from it. Alternatively, you could look at the Sunday Times Guide to Higher Education, which gives an overview of every university in the UK and reviews the 'best' courses - in their opinion. Bear in mind that league tables vary, depending on what factors they are assessing.

At the end of the day, only you will know which is the best course for you.

If you want information about the Computer Science courses at Cardiff University (where I work), please email your address to prospectus@cardiff.ac.uk

What are my chances of getting a high paying job if i double major in math and computer science?

What kind of jobs would be open to me once I graduate and how hard would it be to land a well paying entry level job in this field? How should I prepare while in school? (I am currently a sophomore)

What are my chances of getting a high paying job if i double major in math and computer science?
Usually when you start out after graduation you don't always end up with a big paying job but with a math major and computer science major it can help you get a decent paying job and you can work your way up. A friend of mine just graduated with that double major and now she works on Wallop's Island for NASA. She got her foot in the door by doing an internship for them. There are many research labs that are starting to focus on computer simulation as well so something in the sciences could probably be an option as well. I'm a math major and do a lot of mathematical modeling; particularly in biology. Right now I'm working on an undergrad thesis on math modeling of cancer treatment. There are all sorts of applications for math and that is just one that I know from my own work and experience. I think there are some good job opportunities out there for you. It's just a matter of looking and finding them. Sometimes talking to your professors can help you since they know some people in the field. You could even ask those people questions to get a better idea of what you can do in the future.
Reply:Both fields can provide very lucrative career prospects. Be careful when working on a double major. You can get overloaded with homework and become overwhelmed. Your best bet is to get on fortune.com and look at the top paying jobs. If you find one that interests you, then look at the market for that position in your area to see what kinds of jobs are available and what the starting salary is. You should always research before going to college. There are too many people with college degrees that are unemployed or not working in their degree field.

very important especially if you are applying to big companies for a position that's really computer-related.. however some really ask for your skills, what you can do and how you do it. they would ask a lot of questions about application.

Are job prospects better in computer science or aerospace/aeronautical engineering?

No. The high tech jobs are mostly being outsourced to India or given to H!-Bs.

Are job prospects better in computer science or aerospace/aeronautical engineering?
You do get a demand for jobs in these sectors. There will be always a need for computer technincians, people that design them, fix them and more as we are in the modern day, and computers and electronics will be used more and more. The more the complicated and more skill needed, the higher the pay. Regarding aerospace/aeronautical, there will be always a demand, as people are needed to develop bigger and better aircraft or spacecraft. If you want to be a pilot, getting a digree in aeronautical engineering gives you an advantage over other people.
Reply:It is your proficiency in these disciplines that decides the job prospects. India has a deficiency in aerospace engineers while CS is in teeming abundance. So I'd say that at this point in time, if you have the aptitude, go for aerospace engineering. Upon completion, you can look for specialized jobs and you are also qualified to join the IT industry.

Aerospace giants are already in India and on the lookout for resources. The prospects are good

What jobs can i get if i major computer science?

Im kind of undecided on what i want to major in in college and im already a junior in high school. Can you guys inform me on jobs i can look for after i graduate. i just want "fun" job with something to do with computers. i was thinking about business but i dont want to be stuck in a office and have meetings becase i suck in literature/reading

What jobs can i get if i major computer science?
A Business Systems Administrator (still stuck in an office), Business Systems Analyst, Data Systems Manager, Computer Programmer, etc. Unless you are a Computer Technician (which usually makes less money), You stand no lesser chance of being in an office than you do with a Business Degree. It is what you make of it, and what job you accept that matters

I received a Liberal Arts Degree (for my Bachelors), and worked my way up from a Production Supervisor to a Business Systems Analyst (improving Computer Systems), to an Artificial Intelligence Consultant traveling the Country. When you're good - you'll still be good regardless of the degree, as long as you can prove your worth.
Reply:computer graphics, game design, if you've ever seen the movie Grandmas Boy you will know why these are fun jobs
Reply:If you really want to have fun, you must first earn it. You need to do things most people (like you) don't want to do because it requires efforts.

However, if you can make you to concentrate and not afraid of hard work, your success in what you do will automatically raise you above many many others and that guarantee good jobs and less work and good money.

Always remember, big maney require little on the job work, and non-stop hard work (labor) makes minimum wages.
Reply:Hi u can become a computer technician. You can get to explore the inside of a computer or u can become a trained computer person. You can teach Information Technology.I hopes these help you.
Reply:hi, I was going to major in computer science, but decided against it. My bfs mom is a computer programmer and studied computer science and the people she works with, are all losing their jobs as their jobs are getting offshored to India, etc. She worked at CSC...she as a result had to find a new job. She has not received a pay raise in over 6 years...the computer science type jobs are all getting offshored to foreign countries...I would advise you to stay clear of computer science..I changed my major to business and minor to computer, as a result...I can get a good job having a technological background in computers...but please...avoid computer science.
Reply:Computer Engineer, programmer, graphics designer etc..

Math minor for computer science major?

I'm majoring in Computer Science. I only need to take two more high-level courses in Mathematics to get a minor. Should I? Is it really worth it? What could I do with it? Would it just be another thing for my resume?

Math minor for computer science major?
Absolutely. It will give you an edge over many other candidates.

As far as the utility is concerned, what do you want to do after you graduate? That will determine your answer.
Reply:It'd be a wonderful addition to a resume.
Reply:Why not go for it, you'd be a natural fit for any programing job that desires a strong math background.
Reply:Yes, because the computer science degree wont be worth anything by itself. I think you really need to check in to some real world sources of information about a computer science degree. The fact is, virtually nobody with a CS degree has a job that actually uses it. Most CS work is done in India these days. Americans can't compete due to the wage differential. Min wage in the US is $6/hr and Indians with PhD's cost $1.50/hr.

There are literally about 500K experienced American computer workers out there all looking for work in the CS field. I'm one of them. Most of the guys I've known that were in the field previously are now working in places like WalMart's TV department or worse. Me personally, I am currently training to be an RN (nurse). I wouldn't consider returning to the field because once you have been out of work for more than two years, your degree is considered null and void by most employers.

CS is a very interesting field, but unfortunately, there is no longer any work in it. I still keep it as a hobby, but as long as its legal to send computer work to India, very few Americans will work in CS in this country.

Which is the most suitable foreign language to be learnt with Computer Science at a Graduation level?

The language should support the career, and give an additional dimension to life.

Which is the most suitable foreign language to be learnt with Computer Science at a Graduation level?
The word is "learned." If you're going to graduate school, you'll need to know that!
Reply:Exactly what Maid of the Mist said.
Reply:I would suggest Hebrew a lot of software and hardware are made in Israel. Aside from obvious considerations of any Asian language like Chinese and Japanese. Maybe German too.

What paradigms exist in computer science?

What paradigms are present in computer science? and how has this been affected by computer technology?

What paradigms exist in computer science?
A programming paradigm provides (and determines) the view that the programmer has of the execution of the program. For instance, in object-oriented programming, programmers can think of a program as a collection of interacting objects, while in functional programming a program can be thought of as a sequence of stateless function evaluations.

Just as different groups in software engineering advocate different methodologies, different programming languages advocate different programming paradigms. Some languages are designed to support one particular paradigm (Smalltalk and Java support object-oriented programming while Haskell and Scheme support functional programming), while other programming languages support multiple paradigms (such as Common Lisp, Python, and Oz.)

Many programming paradigms are as well-known for what techniques they forbid as for what they enable. For instance, pure functional programming disallows the use of side-effects; structured programming disallows the use of goto. Partly for this reason, new paradigms are often regarded as doctrinaire or overly rigid by those accustomed to earlier styles. However, this avoiding of certain techniques can make it easier to prove theorems about a program's correctness -- or simply to understand its behavior -- without limiting the generality of the programming language.

Any advice about majoring in MIS or Computer Science? What is the real difference between the 2?

I'm just not sure which one would be a more beneficial major. Any realistic information would be greatly appreciated.

Any advice about majoring in MIS or Computer Science? What is the real difference between the 2?
Look at the link below for the difference between the two. Generally MIS folks manage information systems (like the degree says) and are often found in business programs. Computer science programs typically develop the applications and hardware that MIS folks use.

I am sikky .I did masters in computer science from india. I want toknow that i am eligible for official work?

I have no work experience in USA and India. iwant toknow that iam eligibile for any offficial work, administrative and education related jobs in USA and how much is my worth acc to my qualifications . I have done my graduation in economics and psychology.

I am sikky .I did masters in computer science from india. I want toknow that i am eligible for official work?
To be 'offical' to work you will need to fill out what is called an I-9 form which proves you can legally work in the US. You will need a social security card and drivers license. An academic degree in economics will not guarentee you good pay but it will guarentee you an easy job in an office 9 - 5 M - F.

What's the difference between computing and computer science?

be more specific, plz...and which is a more benefitial degree?

What's the difference between computing and computer science?
Computing is a term that you use to count something. However, in computer Science, you will get introduced to the many basic introductions that you will need to know about the inner working of a computer like a personal computer. Normally you will learn a computer language or two, learn about the basic computer architecture, learn about basic computer development and get involve in a senior computer project. However, after you are done with your undergrad, you will be able to go deeper into the field by deciding the real branch of C.S that you are interested at, for example, A.Ai, human user interface and etc. You can't really tell it is benificial but I think as long as you are a big fan of engineering, you will definitely have fun in your undergrad.

Calculus as a part of Computer Science?

How is calculus a part of computer science? How are these two related? The longest and most meaningful answer gets the best answer!! Thanks a lot.

Calculus as a part of Computer Science?
I spent years doing scientific computing. It is all about integration. Every behavioral model of a real system is a vast array of non linear differential equations.

Are they teaching you the various methods of digital integration? the Z transform and its uses?

If you want to program in robotics, how would you know how to accelerate, decelerate and calculate Jerk (the derivative of acceleration) without calculus?

Even in game programming it would be useful to calculate the results of complex inputs in a future time. For that you may need to solve differential equations, or, at least, integrate.
Reply:no, it is part of statistics
Reply:You wouldn't think so, but taking certain courses makes you think a certain way. Calculus makes you realize more about math problems. Problems like Derivations and basically puzzle solving. When you code you need to have a certain procedural thinking process. The best part about knowing calculus when you code is that you can write a code to SOLVE those dang problems!

What's the difference between Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering & IT Engineering?

I want to find a job in big Software %26amp; Information Technology corporations such as Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, ...

What I must Study in University?

What's the difference between Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering %26amp; IT Engineering?
When you are talking about IT vs Engineering there is a difference. IT people do networking, systems setup, maintenance, and simple stuff like that. True computer engineers program. Computer engineers design and program hardware while software engineers design and program software. IT doesn't do much programming and that is their weakness. A programmer knows how to do everything a IT person can do, but an IT person cannot do what a programmer can do. If you want to work for Google, Microsoft, yahoo, you have to be the best at your field, whether it is IT or Engineering or Programming. You study what you need to study (either IT or Computer Engineering). Make sure you do well and get internships during the summer and experience. That will help.
Reply:Prior to college, these are all basically have the same meaning. I would not stress about it. Start college, go through the core courses, then start to specialize just a bit in what you like. Later on you will get a better feel, but it really is not important now.

All of these big companies you have named have a lot of different types of software/computer jobs, so no doubt what you end up studying in school (as long as it is related to software, computers or the Internet) will be useful to land a job at Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, etc.

Good luck!

How is the computer science program at UCSB?

Do they have a good program? I want one that is not too difficult (I like to have time to sleep!), but of course I want one that will prepare me well for a career.

How is the computer science program at UCSB?
UCSB is probably a good place for you then. Computer science is not easy, and any UC will be challenging. UCSB is not the same level as Berkeley or Standford or even UCLA, but it certainly is respectable, and will definitely prepare you for a career.

Be careful, though. UCSB is not as rigorous as some of the other schools, and it's on a beach. There is a LOT of partying going on, and you will have one of the hardest majors on the campus. Just because it may not be at the cutthroat caliber of the top universities doesn't mean you won't be studying your tail off.

What's the difference between <Computer science> and <computer engineering technology>?

Thanks

What's the difference between %26lt;Computer science%26gt; and %26lt;computer engineering technology%26gt;?
computer science studies and researches better ways of building hardware and software. various issues are studied such as new languages, new search methods, data organization, computer hardware interfaces, drivers, new technology for operating systems and communications/networking, new storage media concepts are developed...

Statistical analysis is done about random events, queueing theory, etc

this is more about advancing the state of the art of hardware and software and the knowledge thereof - patents and Nobel prices are won and a lot of research is done at the universities

computer engineering technology involves using the state of the art technology (both harware and software) and building better systems and applications using these new technologies.

advances are made in how technology changes are managed, engineering processes are developed. studies to improve the engineering processes for a given product are completed. computer engineering technology: designing hardwares.

(It provides knowledge and skill development related to computer engineering and digital electronics)
Reply:Depending on the context, Computer Engineering is typically hardware, very physics intensive. Computer Science is an overview of hardware and software, generally more emphasis on software programming, but a grounding in both. Now, if you're talking about Software Engineering, you're pretty specific to software, except where the software interacts with the hardware. Confused more or less? ;-)

If you're looking at colleges, you'll want to compare the courses to make sure you know which you're interested in. If you're looking at someone's resume, you should probably know more about the subjects before you think about hiring for the position.

I am taking computer science in the fall , what kind of math would be involved?

I am good at algebra and Geomatry, but i am struggling in Algebra 2 with a grade of C because all of my attention went into a really hare AP class . I hope to pay more attention next year in Pre calc.

I am taking computer science in the fall , what kind of math would be involved?
Calculus and logical mathematics (i.e. proving)...called Discrete Mathematics.

You will atmost take one course in algebra and it will be fairly easy so don't worry about it.

Do yourself a favor, get rid of any fears you have. The only way to succeed in higher education is if you are hardworking, expect tough time and are not scared of any course.
Reply:you do mostly algebra 2 and gemotry.

What do you learn in Ap Computer Science?

I was wondering cause I was going to take that class next year? What am I really going to be learning it says I should have passed algebra, but what does that have to do anything with computers? Please explain.

What do you learn in Ap Computer Science?
The AP computer science curriculum involves programming in the JAVA computer programming language. If you take the AP CompSci A class, you will learn the basics of JAVA including syntax and object-oriented programming. If you take the CompSci AB class, you will learn more advanced object-oriented programming, including different data structures to hold data.
Reply:Most computer programming involves math and certainly some of the fun projects like computer graphics. You should be able to check the syllabus to see what types of projects the class will work on or check with students taking the class this year.
Reply:We learned how to work with pixils to create pictures and then we even got involved in computer programming for computer games and things like that. It was based on computer equations (ex: %26lt;if%26gt; "x" moveleft %26gt; "y" moveright). Of course each program is different, and your teacher or professor may use a completely different program to teach from. The final project was thils little stick figure guy we had to create from absolutely nothing, just from programming formulas and then we had to make him do something interesting like dance or blow up or something like that. It was a lot of higher level thinking, and math, very similar to algebraic equations and I wasn't very good at it. Maybe you'll have better luck!

I have a bachelor degree in computer science, is it possible to have master degree in psychology?

If yes, then do you know any good colleges or universities that offer online master in Psychology?

I have a bachelor degree in computer science, is it possible to have master degree in psychology?
No reason you can't get the masters in psych.

I'd suggest checking walden university and the university of phoenix - both offer reasonably priced programs at the masters level - and even into the phd ish level.

Reply:Yes, it's possible. You'll likely have to take several "foundation" courses or several undergraduate courses in psychology to meet the Graduate program prerequisites, but it's definitely possible.

What is the difference between a computer science and software engineering degree?

software engineering would focus on writing software in a programming language like java C# vb and probably some databases

Computerscience would include topics like networking and hardware as well as software development.

Where you are doing the course would also be important

does the college have good links with industry things like that.

Download a version of scheme and work through some of MIT's open courseware for 6.001. I cannot think of a better intro than that course -- which is why numerous universities have their own versions of it. It's what I took long ago, and I still use what I learned in it.

What type of job could i get with a major in math education and a minor in computer science?

Right now I am a math eductaion major but I am thinking about getting a duel degree in the two. Is there any high paying jobs i could get with that type of degree? Or is ot best to just stay with math education?

What type of job could i get with a major in math education and a minor in computer science?
Not specifically. You could end up working for an educational software company, but it would be better if you had a comp sci major and an minor in math education.

Most people get into education because they want to teach. If you don't want to teach, then you should really think about switching to something else.

What do people do with a masters degree in Computer Science?

I'm concerned that I might not be able to find a decent job when I get out of my 4 year program, so I'm considering graduate school as an option.

Do people with this degree do work outside of academic research or teaching?

What do people do with a masters degree in Computer Science?
The previous answer is a joke. I have both my bachelors and masters degrees in Computer Science, and work as a software engineer for a major defense contractor. I'm well on my way towards working my way into a software architecture/systems engineering position, and my job prospects look only better and better over the next 10-15 years. If you can find a job that will pay for you to get your masters part-time, that's ideal. But either way, getting the masters pays.
Reply:I've known at least two people, with "computer Science" degrees that actually have a job, in the "outside world" (outside of academia, I mean). These people had jobs, within the Admin section of organizations, working with the computers and instructing the personnel. They acquired new software, performed updates, did troubleshooting, etc, etc. And that was just a few of the things that they did. If you don't want to work for individual organizations, try to get on at a University (or another type of school - trade, grammer, College, etc.) as an instructor within their "Computer Science" department - huh??? You will have the credentials to do just about anything within that field, including repairs and programming!!!! Sounds interesting - - - - -

What to do with a Computer Science BA degree?

Ive almost finished my degree and Im looking for jobs. In my area there are hardly any technical fields or facilities. Im looking for something close to a 6 figure salary if its out there. Suggestions...

What to do with a Computer Science BA degree?
The 6 figure salaries right out of college left when the US started outsourcing IT jobs.

Even in you have a high GPA and had done some Internship at a big named company, you will not be making six figures right out of the gate!

Your best bet is your school Career Center.

You may have to start in a lower level position to get experience.

Companies are looking to fill IT positions with individuals that can "hit the ground running" and that doesn't apply to college grads.

That question is primarily about you, and secondarily about your school. We know neither. I took the computer path, and ended up switching my major from physics to electrical engineering, My MS was in EE and computer science. Yet, I now wonder how my life would have been different if I had stayed in physics. After 'retirement', I do a lot of reading in physics, and very little in EE or computer science. Go figure.

What is the difference between a computer science degree and a computer engineering degree?

The principle difference between the Master of Engineering and the Master of Science degrees is that the Master of Engineering degree does not require a residency on campus. It is intended to meet the needs of those practicing engineers who are working full time outside the University. It also allows participants to pursue an integrated program of studies by specializing in one engineering discipline and selecting courses from other engineering fields and business subjects related to the individual student's professional work. A successful program to meet these needs requires greater flexibility in operation that is normally possible or intended under the Master of Science degree program.

The program is offered both on campus and through the Center for Advanced Engineering and Technology Education (CAETE), which delivers graduate courses taught on the Boulder campus to business, industry, and government agencies by live television with two-way audio communication. Engineers, computer scientists and technical managers may earn a master's degree in several areas of concentration without driving to campus.

Should I stick with Computer Science or switch to a field which provides better job security?

When you answer keep in mind I am not hard to please - I just want a career in which I can go to work and like what I do, we know some people loathe working and I want at least $50,000-$55,000 to start.

Should I stick with Computer Science or switch to a field which provides better job security?
Job security? That is elusive these days. Yes you can get laid off, outsourced, downsized, etc.

I was with an IT company that went from 10,000 employees to being out of business in one year. They were even running super bowl ads right before they went under.

However, all these things are happening in other fields also.

Do what you enjoy and the money will follow.
Reply:There is really no such thing as job security these days. You can earn a decent living in the computer industry and you will enjoy it so focus on getting a job in that industry. Your best bet is for a large corporation that has been in business for a long time. You will have to do a search of what companies offer the best salary and benefit packages and apply to those companies first.

How do I get an masters in Computer Science from an unrelated BA?

I've taken about 3 CS courses in my life and a few calculus classes. The instructor from my C++ class said I could get a masters degree in 2-2.5 years. I haven't taken any CS courses for about 4 years, however. I want to go to a U.C. I don't think I'm going to do great on the math portion of the GRE, taking into account practice scores and my SAT results. I guess the place to start would be with an admissions advisor but they might not take me seriously considering my BA was in Literature. I'm willing to start at a community college in the bay area but I don't think they usually offer much selection in terms of transferrable programming classes. If I can't do the masters then I'll try to do a second BS. Anyone out there with experience have suggestions?

How do I get an masters in Computer Science from an unrelated BA?
Each degree is not contingent on the last so long as you have satisfied any pre-reqs. LIke Pharm - D school requires 2 levels of Chemistry which lots of BA's don't require, so look at the University of choice, see what their pre-reqs are, and if you cannot figure it out, call that dept. or if it's close call and go talk to an admission advisor and they'll direct you to the correct resources. Sometimes the department can send you a book letting you know all the pertinent facts. You can just take those classes separately - but the degree classes, they have to accept all those credits as a lot, if you don't have a degree, they can pick and choose which classes "they'll accept".

Whats the difference between a computer science major and a computer engineering major?

what are some good schools for these majors. nothing elite i have around a 3.0 and average act. anywhere in the us is okay for me.

Whats the difference between a computer science major and a computer engineering major?
The difference is getting a job.

My brother, a computer programmer, said computer engineering is definitely superior to computer porgramming now because so many computer programming jobs are going overseas.

My advice? Double major in something else besides computer engineering. Your degree has to last you your entire life. Get it in a field that has a chance of keeping you employed for the next 40 years, if at all possible. Health care is a sure bet. Check the Labor Bureau for info on their projections.

My brother got his masters at George Mason U in VA. A good solid school, maybe not so competitive, though.

By the way, electrical engineering is best of all. My brother says that elec. engineers actually like their work, whatever that means. My brother writes code as he is a software programmer and he gets paid very well, but again, those jobs may be disappearing overseas sooner rather than later.
Reply:Computer science deals with creating the box and systems and improving it. Design and theory. Design of the Bios the Instruction Set.

Computer engineering deals with connecting it all together at the work site. Connectivity. Pieceing it all together and making it work for the end user.
Reply:Computer Science is emerged completely into the programming aspects of computers. You would be starting with simple introduction to programming classes such as C++ or Java and eventually go on to work on a senior project revolving a piece of software you would develop.

Computer engineering on the other hand provides you the opportunity to work with the hardware aspects of computers. You would be taking classes of both software and hardware related topics for computer. In this major, your senior project could also involve you building some form of hardware, and programming it as well.

If you are a good mathematician, no need to go for something as trivial as computer science.

"But I've heard that physics majors can work as engineers right out of college."

Hardly. A lot of physicists work as engineers (like me) but we don't do it right out of college. We work as engineers in fields for which we managed to acquire a lot of experience either in research labs, at universities or companies which gave us the chance to grow into a certain line of work. As engineer you get your job offers because of your experience, not because of your major. A physics major alone does not buy you anything. You also need some practical exposure either on an experiment or program.

With a mathematics major you might be able to get into the financial field (you would have to work on stochastics, game theory and related modeling techniques). With computer science you would have a much broader exposure. The money is probably the same, unless you can manage to make it into investment companies like a friend of ours. Then it is A LOT more.
Reply:All 3, you are looking to add more years to your undergrad then it would take to get a Masters . Pay scales usually increase with the highest degree, not the number of BS degrees.

If you are looking for cash, get an MBA, if you want to be a prof. see which field has profs that pay the highest. My guess is that computer science will pay higher.

Reply:I'd say Computer science. I am a computer science major and I know that some of the highest paying jobs are in the video game industry. With a degree in physics and computer science, you'll be one of the minority to be able to program the physics engines for upcoming video games. With the onset of multi-core processor technology, physics engines, although already highly advanced, stand to become even more in depth and important to new video games.

You'll get enough of math in physics and computer science and learn the implementation as well as the theory.

Good luck!
Reply:I did my undergrad in math and physics. Then I got a PhD in math. It's great experience to really get the math down, and it really helped me to more readily understand a lot of complicated physics.

However, I now find that I am unemployable. Professor jobs are few, and the field is so competitive. I've been taking adjunct jobs at community colleges for very little pay.

You cannot get into any math field (finance, etc.) with anything less than a PhD. And even then it's hard. Your PhD would have to be in math finance, actuarial, or whatever field that you choose.

Go with computer science. You have a lot better chance of finding a decent job that way.

What is the difference between computer science and computer systems engineering in collage?

whats your idea on both?

i am actually studying engineering and its my first year, i dont know whether to drop out or to continue, i dont know what the hell i am doing exactly ,i have an average good enough to study medicine, but since i am stupid enough i had to study engineering .

what do you think? i am lost!

What is the difference between computer science and computer systems engineering in collage?
Computer Science is the study of how computers actually work, from their 0's and 1's all the way to the interaction of components and programming.

Systems Engineering is the study of how to completely computerize an operation, like a WalMart or Home Depot. It uses computers to optimize all aspects of a business.

By the way, engineering is not a stupid profession. It's very difficult at times, but well worth the effort in the end. Without engineering, we wouldn't have anywhere to live or work, nor would we have over half the things that we use on an everyday basis.

Just hang in there and make it to at least 1st qtr junior year before you decide to quit or change majors.
Reply:Science is the use of something, Engineering is the design/ creation of it. If you can quit thinking of yourself as stupid and see the clues in your paragraph that I see, you'll study both the PC engineering AND medicine and go on to create medically useful machines. I wish you good luck at this. We need good, accurate machines in that field.

How important is GPA with a computer science degree?

I am in college going for a CS degree, how much do employers take college GPA into consideration? My GPA is low because I had to take 2 years of german. Will companies not want to hire me because I had a D in german II, or will they not even care because that has nothing to do with any job I will get.

How important is GPA with a computer science degree?
I have been lead to beleive it's the degree that is important not the GPA.especially after you are working it will be performance that counts.
Reply:When you interview, point it out for them. If they are concerned about your GPA they will ask about it...at least from my experience. Good employers / interviewers know there is much more to a job candidate than a GPA.

Is it possible to become a teacher with a computer science degree?

if so, how much will I be making annually here in Cali?

Is it possible to become a teacher with a computer science degree?
Yes.

You will have to go back to school and take some classes in order to get your teaching certification.

What you want to look at is teaching Business and Information Technology (categorized as Career and Technical - formerly known as vocational) teaching programs.

This is a high demand area and many schools will hire you on a provisional license.

Depending on your undergrad degree (CS degrees vary wildly) - if you have a bunch of math courses you could also consider teaching math - even in higher demand.

Salaries in CA? Don't have a clue - find the CA Department of Ed site and they will have that data. Don't expect it to be very much. Anywhere from 1/2 to 1/8 of what you would make in industry with a comp sci degree.

Be careful what you wish for! Teaching is a very tough job. It is not like the usual public image. You will be working 60 hours a week and the summers off thing is more of a myth than a reality.
Reply:yes. not as much as you'd make in business. Most states post average or beginning salaries on their education website.
Reply:well, you'd start on a scale, contingent upon the districts pay presumably. Yo bet you can teach with a comp sci degree because you've probably taken some Math and science classes that are hard, and the schools would KILL for you! My personal advice... Go through a teaching program at a college and get a teaching license first... don't go directly into the classroom. You'll get the skillset you need and be effective, find a good market out there, and not get overstressed.

Comp Sci is the most popular major here.

98% job placement immediately out of college.

Average starting salary is 56000.

And the school's hard to get into, but not impossible.
Reply:Probably something like MIT or CalTech
Reply:in the Northeast, its MIT then RPI

Are there any really good jobs for a person with an AA in Computer Science?

In San Jose CA, and I don't want to do Computer Technology Work.

Are there any really good jobs for a person with an AA in Computer Science?
Some of the private employment agencies have the best job listings. but be care as many jobs seem to be up to often for it not to have someone farming out jobs from within the company to them for a little extra profit.

I would buy some of the magazines relating to those companies you want to work for and get information on them. you can also go to the Internet and inn yahoo search type in computer science companies or several ways to search such as companies using computer science. That should bring up many companies you can research. most of them have information about employment.

If you are a minority you have the edge. If you are a female you have the edge in some areas. If you are a minority female you have a job in more than a few companies as many are seeking minority female applicants tot satisfy state and federal guidelines however unmoral and unethical, and illegal that is under the constitution. So us it.l

get specialized in something else if you dont want to do what you are specialized at.
Reply:You should consider an AA degree in Computer Science to be a stepping-stone to higher education. An AA in CS will only get you the jobs you've described.

This kind of job is good experience and better than some entry-level positions that are out there. You'll need to get more education/experience to get better jobs.

University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario. Considered one of the best engineering schools in the world.
Reply:waterloo and uoft are the best for engineering..but the are really hard and uoft is known to make u wanna kill ur self..the easiest school that has engineering is ottawa its really easy and it still gives u an engineering degree tho its not whidly recognized..mcmaster and queens are farly recognized and not as intence as uoft and waterloo...good luck(ps: dont go to uoft)

What exactly is computer science?

im applying fof college this year and i dont know what the hell is computer science,

what do they exactly teach you there?

What exactly is computer science?
Computer Science is a study of computers in general.

Computer Science teaches you how to make programs by using C++ and Java Languages, make Operating System, learn Computer logics and theory of computing, learn about networking and understanding the operations of the computer and it's core concepts.
Reply:In my experience, most institutions lump basic object oriented programming and process analysis as "computer science". Computer engineering meant they taught you C programming. This was particulary fruestrating to me as I was looking for network engineering - the implementation and organization of networks starting with switches and working all the way up to the server level. Most traditional institutions do not address this need yet.
Reply:Computer science is a very general term for anything dealing with computers. As you go through college, you will decide where to focus. Some options are - 1) programming (i.e. software development, 2) networking, 3) hardware (i.e. device drivers such as video cards.

It all will depend on your interest.
Reply:The science of computers.

I am taking computer science in the fall , what kind of math would be involved?

I am good at algebra and Geomatry, but i am struggling in Algebra 2 with a grade of C because all of my attention went into a really hare AP History class . I hope to pay more attention next year in Pre calc.

I AM PLANING TO MAJOR IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL

I am taking computer science in the fall , what kind of math would be involved?
Usually, Comp Sci majors have to take 2-3 years of calculus. You'll need to get your math skills up... but don't worry....

Calculus is actually quite a bit of fun. A lot of times, people that struggle with elementary math do really well as soon as they get to more interesting courses. You might just enjoy yourself.

If not, then you'll have to work pretty hard, and be a part of some good study groups.
Reply:Through calculus, you can also expect to take 2-3 years of physics and chemistry or biology too.
Reply:I'm a great programmer, and you don't need as much calculus as the books say you do. :P

Trigonometry, sure. But it involves more logic than math.

What can I do with a BA in Computer Science or Information Technology?

I'm thinking about switching my major to this because I like math and working with computers. What kind of careers will this prepare me for and is this a good major?

What can I do with a BA in Computer Science or Information Technology?
As a general overview, the typical path after a 4-year degree in Computer Science would be an entry-level position as a programmer doing programming "grunt work" or software development as a junior member of a project team.

An Information Technology degree would put you more in a position to work as part of a team managing personal computers, servers, and networks for a business.
Reply:Yes, definitely a good idea. A major in computer science/or information technology will prepare you for a job that is in high demand. I would recommend getting a certification also such as ones from Microsoft or Cisco which will give you additional earning power. It's one of the hottest fields, despite the dot com bust and continues to grow. You can make major money in that field - if you land with the right company and with hard work, you could be making six digits in a couple of years. Good luck studying!

Which is a more superior field of study, Computer engineering or computer science?

I love computers and am wondering what to study for when I hit college.

Which is a more superior field of study, Computer engineering or computer science?
Both Computer Science (study of software development) and Engineering (study of hardware development) depend on each other (you need software for users to interact with the computer and you need the computer to store the software). Can't really see a superior field of study between the two.

You should decide what you really prefer to study. If you want to learn a lot about programming and making softwares, then take Computer Science. If you want to learn how to make hardware and circuits for the computer, then take Computer Engineering.

What is the difference between a Computer Science a Computer engineering?

Please explain.

What is the difference between a Computer Science a Computer engineering?
Engineering of all kinds is usually concerned with adapting existing tools to specific applications. So a computer engineer might work on chip design for the next generation of computers.

Science of all kinds is generally concerned with expanding existing knowledge and developing new kinds of knowledge. So a computer scientist might try to figure out what might be used instead of chips, or what the theoretical limits of any kind of computer could be.

There is no small amount of overlap between the two - new science is often discovered by engineers who are pushing the limits of their systems, while scientists often have to be excellent engineers in order to design equipment to test their theories.

Perhaps more distinction might be seen where there is less overlap - there are many engineers who never develop any new theories about how computers work, and just produce useful equipment (like Thomas Edison); conversely, there are many scientists who never even get their hands dirty and do all their work on paper and in their head (like Albert Einstein).

If you ask me, they're BOTH great to have around! ( :
Reply:the word Science and the word Engineering
Reply:Computer science is concerned with the theory and development of computer software (eg, programming languages, operating systems, etc), while computer engineering has to do with the design of actual computers. Computer engineering is a sub-field of electrical engineering.
Reply:Computer Science is concerned with the theory of computing, which, by the way, exists independently of computers. Think of algorithms, convergence analysis, Turing machines, and so on.

Computer Engineering is about the mechanics of the computer. Think processors, memory, etc.

Practically speaking, the first is about software, whereas the second deals with hardware.

How to get gud marks in computer science?

I am in 11th std and i have taken computer science(c++) as optional subject but it's very hard to get good marks in it and my exams are approaching ,am really worried abt it. Please someone help me to get gud marks.....

How to get gud marks in computer science?
try to get the logic of the program....n try to understand why it is so?...then try out the program on your own...on the computer..by doing that may be u'll b able to come up with a logic of your own!...because a program need not have only one logic that is executable!...mugging up definitely seems to be a stupid choice in such a case!
Reply:just mug up .......there is no other option !!!!!!!!
Reply:BUY ANY SAMPLE Books OF COMP SCIENCE make small program

work hard on pointers, array

once u start making small logical programs u'll find it easy

try to sit on comp with those who knows C++ she/he will help u out
Reply:Spelling and syntax is important in programming languages. If you misspell the commands or don't format them properly, they probably won't work.

I'm majoring in computer science at my university. How can I get into a career of game development?

I've taken a c++ course but what other skills do you think I will need to further my career? Any other tips are welcome.

I'm majoring in computer science at my university. How can I get into a career of game development?
Your academic advisor should be able to help you with that question. Your school may already offer coursework that could lead you into game development and if not, should be able to provide resources to assist you.

Which is easier to take in college: BCIS or Computer Science? They will be online classes.?

I am familiar with the various programs covered in BCIS. What is computer Science? What does it cover? The college calls this class Microcomputer Applications. I am looking for ease, if computer science is easy, I will take it; otherwise, it will be BCIS.

Which is easier to take in college: BCIS or Computer Science? They will be online classes.?
BCIS would be easier....more focus on the business aspect of computer systems.

True CIS is where you would be writing your own compilers and operating systems.
